Meet Mavis: A Woman of Many Talents

Valentine’s Day often celebrates love in it's most romantic form, but at it's core, love is so much more than that. It’s about embracing yourself, honoring your journey, and cherishing the relationships that uplift and empower you.

In this second part of DMK's #WithLove campaign, we’re thrilled to introduce Mavis — a model, content creator, and trainee lawyer, to explore love in all its dimensions — self-love, ambition, and the passion that fuels her life.

From Runways to Courtrooms: Falling in Love with Two Worlds

Mavis’s journey into modeling began at just 16 years old, inspired by the glamour of the Victoria’s Secret fashion shows and Asia’s Next Top Model. She took a leap of faith, auditioned, and landed her first contract. For her, modeling is about bringing clients’ visions to life and the joy of seeing their happiness when the work is done.

Her love for law, on the other hand, stems from her passion for reading, writing, and — yes — arguing. She jokes that it’s hard to be her friend or boyfriend because she loves a good debate! Balancing both passions hasn’t been easy, especially during law school, where she had to sacrifice family and social connections to juggle modeling gigs and her studies. But for Mavis, the busyness is a blessing, and the fulfillment she gets from both careers makes it all worthwhile.

 Chasing Dreams & Balancing Passions

One of the biggest challenges Mavis faced was learning to balance two demanding careers without compromising her well-being. Surprisingly, the hardest battle wasn’t external — it was with herself.

Q: What challenges have you faced as a woman in two demanding professions, and how have you overcome them?

"I was my biggest enemy in terms of wanting to do both well. There were periods of time during exams when I had to study the whole time — I just couldn't take any time off to do modeling. I tried to do that once, balancing a lot on my plate, and it was exam season with a couple of jobs lined up. I remember feeling so exhausted, waking up at 7 AM for a shoot after studying the whole night, and I almost fainted during the shoot. That experience taught me that I still have to learn how to balance both — you can’t do everything. There’s a limit to your health, your capabilities, and your time."

This turning point reshaped her approach to work and self-care.

"Setting boundaries and recognising personal limits is important. "

Powerful Moments: Owning the Runway & Courtroom

Whether in the courtroom or on the runway, Mavis finds strength in moments where she brings her skills to life.

Q: What’s a moment in your career when you felt most powerful, whether in the courtroom or on the runway?

"One of my most powerful moments as a future  lawyer lawyer came in law school, during a moot competition. I was cross-examining a witness, trying to get them to admit something, and in that moment, I thought — wow, I feel so so powerful right now, no wonder so many litigation lawyers love their jobs!  learnt that a huge part of advocacy is the conversation between you and the judge, and the process of trying to persuade them to see your point of view and to advance your client’s case. I felt like I was doing something truly rewarding ."

She is positive there will be even more powerful moments in future as she works towards her aspirations.

In modeling, her standout moment was walking for Louis Vuitton’s first-ever show in Singapore.

"That's probably one of the biggest brands that I've ever worked with in my career. It was a fashion runway show in Singapore. They held it in Singapore for the first time and it was so cool!"

These moments serve as milestones in her journey — proof that with passion and perseverance, anything is possible.

"Power isn't just about presence  it's about impact. "

Love in All Its Forms: A Broader Definition

This Valentine’s Day, Mavis encourages everyone to broaden their definition of love.

For Mavis, love has evolved over time. As a young girl, she thought there was only one definition of love - romantic love. As she matured, she realised the importance of platonic love and familial bonds. With time and experience, she’s come to see love in all its forms — friendship, family, and self-love — each playing an essential role in her life.

Q: How has your definition of love evolved through your career and personal experiences?

"As I grew up and became more mature, I had goals and ambitions that I want to accomplish in life — I wanted to flourish in my career and become the best version of myself. It's not to say that romantic love took a back seat, I think that's important as well, but I've just come to realise the importance of family and friends. It’s such a blessing to be surrounded by people who truly care for you, and to me, love has taken on a much broader meaning."

"Surround yourself with peole who uplift you, and don't forget to love yourself."

Advice for Women Chasing Their Dreams

Mavis’s advice for anyone aspiring to succeed in multiple fields is simple: let go of self-limiting beliefs and start.

Q: What is the most important piece of advice you would give to someone aspiring to succeed as a model, content creator, and lawyer, and how do you tailor your guidance for each field?

"None of these careers — modeling, content creation, or law — are easy to start, but the most important thing is to simply begin. For modeling, I would say the key is to take care of yourself and maintain your physique. I actually think that's the hardest part of being a model – sticking to the measurements, which requires a lot of self-discipline. In fact, self-discipline is essential in all aspects of life, especially for content creation and law. Content creation demands a lot of effort, brainstorming, executing ideas, and editing. Law school comes with a heavy load of assignments and readings that must be completed. Aside from that, I would say dream big because the sky's the limit. You can achieve anything you set your mind to — the most important thing is to start and keep going. Perseverance will reward those who don’t give up."

Mavis is living proof that you don’t have to choose just one path — you can chase multiple dreams, as long as you have the right mindset and discipline.

"Dream big because the sky is the limit."

Rooted in Love: Empowerment Through Self-Acceptance

For Mavis, self-love is all about embracing herself fully — flaws and all. She recognises how society often emphasises perfection, especially for women, but she chooses to redefine beauty on her own terms.

Q: What does love and self-love mean to you in the context of empowerment?

"Self-love for me has always meant embracing myself, including the flaws I perceive myself to have. As women, society conditions us to be so in tune of what our flaws are — there’s a million beauty products out there promising to fix whatever imperfections we are supposed to have. But for me, self-love means taking care of myself, embracing myself or whatever mistakes I made and most importantly to love myself despite whatever flaws I think I have and always striving to be better."

"Self-love is about striving to be better while recognising that you are already enough."

A Valentine’s Message to Women Everywhere

Q: If you could write a Valentine’s card to women everywhere, what would it say?

"Dear ladies,

I hope that you can live every day with lots of love. Always remember to tell your loved ones family, friends, partner that you love them but most importantly don't forget to tell yourself that.

Happy Valentine's Day.”

Closing Words

As Mavis continues to conquer both the courtroom and the runway, her journey is a reminder that love, whether for ourselves or others, is a powerful force that shapes our lives. It’s not about perfection or having it all figured out — it’s about learning, growing, and embracing the love that surrounds us.

To every woman reading this, remember: love is not just something you give others, it’s something you must also give to yourself. Celebrate your strengths, embrace your imperfections, and never stop striving for growth!

This Valentine’s Day, let’s embrace love in every form — whether it’s the love we have for others, or the love we nurture within ourselves. Happy Valentine’s Day. 💖
